COUNCILLOR – INNUSHKUEU (INNU WOMAN)
• Brenda Michel is an Innushkueu, member of Ekuanitshit (Mingan), and is currently serving her third term as an elected councillor. All five elected members of the Council are responsible for specific portfolios, with two seats reserved for women for several years;
• She works full-time as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ekuanitshit Group of Enterprises and served on the Group’s Board of Directors for over 10 years, contributing to the community’s economic development;
• A member of the Board of Directors of the CDEPNQL (Economic Development Commission of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador), she actively supports economic and community projects;
• Deeply committed to the role of Innu women, she is involved with the local Innu women’s group Utapun;
• Holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration earned through a combination of certificates, she brings her education and experience to serve her community and promote sustainable development.

• Brenda Michel est Innushkueu, membre de la communauté d’Ekuanitshit (Mingan), et accomplit actuellement son troisième mandat en tant que conseillère élue. Les cinq élus du Conseil sont responsables de dossiers précis, avec deux sièges réservés aux femmes depuis plusieurs années;
• Directrice générale des entreprises du Groupe Ekuanitshit, elle a été membre du conseil d’administration du même Groupe pendant plus de 10 ans, contribuant au développement économique de sa communauté;
• Membre du conseil d’administration de la Commission de développement économique des Premières Nations du Québec et du Labrador (CDEPNQL), elle participe activement à la promotion de projets économiques et communautaires;
• Très engagée pour la place des femmes innues, elle collabore avec le Regroupement local des femmes Innushkueu Utapun;
• Titulaire d’un baccalauréat en administration des affaires obtenu par cumul de certificats, elle met sa formation et son expérience au service de sa communauté et de son développement durable.

• A dynamic leader with a strong background in political science, Chief Irene Neeposh brings extensive experience gained through her work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations at local, regional, and provincial levels;
• A graduate of Carleton University, she began her career by advocating for community engagement and the development of equitable policies that advance the well-being of Indigenous peoples;
• Known for her strategic vision and commitment to public service, she has championed initiatives focused on social equity, sustainable economic growth, and the balance between traditional and Western knowledge systems;
• Her leadership is grounded in a deep belief that education — whether rooted in Eeyou or Western knowledge — is a vital bridge between generations and a foundation for cultural and economic development;
• Deeply engaged in advancing Indigenous participation in regional development, she promotes approaches based on respect for rights and sovereignty, inclusive collaboration, the recognition of traditional knowledge, and the creation of sustainable economic opportunities;
• Through her vision and dedication, Chief Neeposh continues to shape a future in which Indigenous communities play an active role in the decisions that define their lands and collective development.

• Leader dynamique dotée d’une solide formation en science politique, la Cheffe Irene Neeposh met à profit une vaste expérience acquise au sein d’organisations autochtones et non autochtones, tant à l’échelle locale, régionale que provinciale;
• Diplômée de l’Université Carleton, elle a amorcé sa carrière en s’engageant dans la défense de la participation citoyenne et l’élaboration de politiques équitables pour les communautés autochtones;
• Reconnue pour sa vision stratégique et son dévouement au service public, elle porte des initiatives axées sur l’équité sociale, le développement économique durable et la réconciliation entre savoirs traditionnels et occidentaux;
• Son leadership s’enracine dans une conviction profonde : l’éducation, qu’elle soit issue du savoir eeyou ou du savoir occidental, demeure la clé pour bâtir des ponts entre les générations et assurer un développement respectueux des valeurs culturelles;
• Engagée dans la réflexion sur la participation des Premières Nations au développement régional, elle prône des approches fondées sur le respect des droits et de la souveraineté, la collaboration inclusive, la reconnaissance des savoirs traditionnels et la création d’opportunités économiques durables;
• Par sa vision et son engagement, la Cheffe Neeposh contribue à tracer une voie vers un avenir où les communautés autochtones participent pleinement aux décisions qui façonnent leur territoire et leur développement collectif.

COUNCILLOR – RESPONSIBLE FOR HEALTH, GOVERNANCE, AND WOMEN’S ISSUES
• Claudia Newashish is a dedicated leader within her community, where she serves as councillor and oversees several strategic files essential to collective well-being;
• As the representative responsible for health and social services, she actively works on developing and improving medical and social services, enhancing access to care, and promoting the well-being of families;
• She is also responsible for administration and governance, ensuring the oversight of internal policies, sound financial management, and the implementation of effective governance strategies adapted to community realities;
• With particular attention to women’s issues, she advocates for women’s rights, contributes to efforts to combat violence, and is fully committed to promoting women’s leadership within the community;
• Through her strong sense of responsibility and her vision focused on sustainable and human-centered development, Claudia works to strengthen the essential structures of her community while fostering citizen participation and equity.

CONSEILLÈRE ÉLUE – RESPONSABLE DE LA SANTÉ, DE LA GOUVERNANCE ET DE LA CONDITION FÉMININE
• Claudia Newashish est une leader engagée au sein de sa communauté, où elle occupe le rôle de conseillère élue et assume plusieurs dossiers stratégiques essentiels au mieux-être collectif;
• Responsable des dossiers de la santé et des services sociaux, elle travaille activement au développement et à l’amélioration des services médicaux et sociaux, à l’accès aux soins ainsi qu’à la promotion du bien-être des familles;
• Elle est également responsable des dossiers de l’administration et de la gouvernance, où elle veille à l’encadrement des politiques internes, à une saine gestion financière et à la mise en place de stratégies de gouvernance efficaces et adaptées aux réalités communautaires;
• Portant une attention particulière à la condition féminine, elle défend les droits des femmes, contribue à la lutte contre la violence et s’engage pleinement dans la promotion du leadership féminin au sein de la communauté;
• Par son sens des responsabilités et sa vision centrée sur le développement durable et humain, Claudia travaille à renforcer les structures essentielles de sa communauté tout en valorisant la participation citoyenne et l’équité.

VICE GRANDE CHEFFE ET CHEFFE CONSEILLÈRE DE LA PREMIÈRE NATION WOLASTOQIYIK WAHSIPEKUK
• Journaliste de carrière, Shirley Kennedy a consacré près de 25 ans de sa vie au plus important groupe de presse indépendante de l’Est du Québec, où elle a occupé durant dix ans le poste d’éditrice avant de prendre sa retraite en décembre 2024;
• Élue Cheffe conseillère de la Première Nation Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk en 2020, elle a vu son mandat renouvelé en 2024. Quelques mois plus tard, elle a été nommée vice-grande cheffe de la Nation;
• Responsable des Finances, des Communications, des Activités traditionnelles et du Territoire, elle met son expérience et sa rigueur au service du développement durable et du rayonnement de sa communauté;
• Profondément engagée pour la cause des femmes et des enfants, elle a accueilli en 2021, au nom de sa Nation, l’organisation régionale de la Marche mondiale des femmes, un moment fort qui s’est conclu sur la pointe de Cacouna;
• Mère de deux jeunes femmes, elle milite activement pour la valorisation de l’éducation, la prise de parole et la reconnaissance du rôle essentiel des femmes au sein de la société et des Nations autochtones.
Citation : À l’instar de la majorité des femmes à travers le monde, les femmes autochtones font face à de nombreux défis, notamment en matière de violence, de santé et de conditions socio-économiques. Comme l’ensemble des femmes autochtones, les femmes wolastoqey occupent des rôles essentiels au sein de leur communauté, alliant spiritualité, savoirs traditionnels et leadership. Elles sont souvent porteuses de vie et gardiennes du savoir, notamment en matière de nature et de cérémonies.
WOLASTOQIYIK WAHSIPEKUK OF CACOUNA
VICE GRAND CHIEF AND COUNCIL CHIEF OF THE WOLASTOQIYIK WAHSIPEKUK FIRST NATION
• A career journalist, Shirley Kennedy dedicated nearly 25 years to the largest independent press group in Eastern Quebec, where she served as editor for ten years before retiring in December 2024;
• Elected as Council Chief of the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation in 2020, she was re-elected in 2024. A few months later, she was appointed Vice Grand Chief of the Nation;
• Responsible for Finance, Communications, Traditional Activities, and Territory, she brings her experience and leadership to advancing sustainable development and the visibility of her community;
• Deeply committed to the cause of women and children, she welcomed, on behalf of her Nation, the regional organization of the World March of Women in 2021—an important event that culminated at Pointe de Cacouna;
• Mother of two young women, she actively advocates for education, empowerment, and recognition of the essential role of women within society and Indigenous Nations.
Citation: Like most women around the world, Indigenous women face many challenges, particularly regarding violence, health, and socio-economic conditions. Like all Indigenous women, Wolastoqey women hold essential roles within their community, combining spirituality, traditional knowledge, and leadership. They are often life-givers and knowledge keepers, especially in matters related to nature and ceremonies.
SAVANNAH MCGREGOR
ANISHINABEG FROM KITIGAN ZIBI
GRAND CHIEF OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHINABEG NATION TRIBAL COUNCIL (AANTC)
• A community member of Kitigan Zibi, she represents the First Nations that are members of the Tribal Council: Apitipi Anicinapek, Abitibiwinni, Long Point, Kebaowek, Lac Simon, Kitcisakik, and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg;
• Mandated by the Chiefs of the Nation to support negotiation teams at both the federal and provincial levels, she works to protect and defend collective inherent rights;
• National Women’s Representative for the Assembly of First Nations Quebec–Labrador (AFNQL) and Chair of the National Caucus of Elected Women Leaders within the AFN;
• Educated in Indigenous Studies, Political Science, French, and Governance, she is committed to inspiring youth — the leaders of tomorrow — to believe in their potential and follow the path guided by their mentors.

GRANDE CHEFFE DU CONSEIL TRIBAL DE LA NATION ANISHINABEG (AANTC)
• Membre de la communauté de Kitigan Zibi, elle représente les Premières Nations membres du Conseil tribal, soit Apitipi Anicinapek, Abitibiwinni, Long Point, Kebaowek, Lac Simon, Kitcisakik et Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg;
• Mandatée par les Chefs de la Nation pour appuyer les équipes de négociation aux niveaux fédéral et provincial, elle œuvre à la protection et à la défense des droits inhérents collectifs;
• Représentante nationale des femmes à l’Assemblée des Premières Nations Québec–Labrador (APNQL) et présidente du caucus national des femmes élues au sein de l’APN;
• Formée en études autochtones, en science politique, en français et en gouvernance, elle s’engage à inspirer la jeunesse, les leaders de demain, à croire en leur potentiel et à poursuivre le chemin tracé par leurs mentors.

• Delegate Councillor for the following administrative units: Heritage, Culture and Identity; Economy, Employment and Strategic Partnerships; Finance, Procurement and IT Systems; and finally, Recreation, Sports and Community Life;
• Member of the Optimist Club for 26 years;
• Churchwarden and volunteer in her parish for many years as well.
Youth, culture, and the economy are at the heart of her concerns. Moreover, respect, openness, and partnership undeniably define her actions.

GRAND COUNCIL OF THE CREES (EEYOU ISTCHEE) / CREE NATION GOVERNMENT
• First woman to be elected Grand Chief of the Cree Nation;
• She has over 12 years of experience in administration and management, working for various Cree entities and organizations at both the local and regional levels;
• She was pleased to serve Eeyou Istchee in mandates that included Chairmanship of the Eeyou Land Use Planning Commission, Justice Committee Member, and leading the Cree-Quebec Table on Environment and Protected Areas.
She believes her four pillars are the foundation and the key to unlocking a healthy future for Eeyou Istchee: Cree Based Model for Governance and Financial Planning, Investment in the Cree language and Cultural Preservation, Protection of Eeyou Istchee and the Cree Way of Life, and lastly Cree Mixed Economy.

• Première femme élue Grande Cheffe de la Nation Crie;
• Elle compte plus de 12 ans d’expérience en administration et gestion, travaillant pour diverses entités et organisations cries aux niveaux local et régional;
• Elle a eu l’honneur de servir Eeyou Istchee dans le cadre de mandats comprenant la présidence de la Commission de planification de l’utilisation des terres Eeyou, son rôle de membre du Comité de justice, ainsi que sa direction de la Table Crie-Québec sur l’environnement et les aires protégées.
Elle croit que ces quatre piliers constituent la base et la clé pour assurer un avenir sain pour Eeyou Istchee : un modèle cri pour la gouvernance et la planification financière, l’investissement dans la langue et la préservation culturelle cries, la protection d’Eeyou Istchee et du mode de vie cri, et enfin l’économie mixte crie.

• Serving 12 years on the Council before her election, she led initiatives such as a landmark clean energy deal with Hydro Quebec and now chairs a $56M campaign for a cultural center, the largest project in her community’s history;
• She founded SkyWoman Consulting in 2024, advancing First Nations’ self-determination and rights;
• Recognized for her activism, including a 2023 lesbian visibility award, she inspires through public speaking, advocacy, and mentorship.

• Après 12 ans au sein du Conseil avant son élection, elle a mené des initiatives telles qu’un accord historique sur l’énergie propre avec Hydro-Québec et préside actuellement une campagne de 56 millions de dollars pour un centre culturel, le plus grand projet de l’histoire de sa communauté;
• En 2024, elle a fondé SkyWoman Consulting pour promouvoir l’autodétermination et les droits des Premières Nations;
• Reconnue pour son activisme, notamment un prix de visibilité lesbienne en 2023, elle inspire par ses conférences, son militantisme et son mentorat.

• Member of the Uapishka Station Board of Directors – a scientific research station located on the traditional Nitassinan territory of Pessamit.
